Clients often tell us that they are not satisfied with the PowerPoint presentations they receive from a graphic designer. Templates are not efficient and a worked-out presentation is not dynamic enough. Of course we have a great deal of respect for the beautiful creative things graphic designers design. Yet we notice that graphic designers often cannot or will not work in PowerPoint. Let's take a look at why that is and why choosing a graphically trained presentation designer is the right choice for every presentation.
To begin with, there is the natural aversion of many designers to everything that comes from Microsoft. Designers have always been Apple's primary target group and they still form the largest and most loyal users. Since PowerPoint is a Microsoft product, the programme works differently in a Microsoft environment than in an Apple environment.
Graphic designers are used to working with design software such as Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop. PowerPoint, however, requires a different approach. This difference can cause frustration for designers who are less familiar with PowerPoint's specific functionalities.
Whereas the emphasis in graphic designs often lies on aesthetics and branding, PowerPoint presentations are all about effectively conveying information. A good presentation calls for a perfect balance between visuals and text. The story must be clear, structured and tailored to the audience's needs and the objective of the presentation.
Graphic designers often make static designs such as logos, brochures, posters, ... As already described above, the objective of a presentation is often very different. Animations, phased information build-up and slide transitions keep the audience engaged and reduce the 'PowerPoint feel' of the presentation. The right combination requires knowledge of the programme but also experience with its possibilities.
The sequence of slides tells a story and that must also be conveyed in the design and the animations. In addition, PowerPoint offers possibilities for interactive elements such as hyperlinks, clickable buttons and complex navigation flows. Conveying the story well and adding interactivity requires a thorough knowledge of the PowerPoint programme but also of presentations in general.
Translating a company identity into a dynamic PowerPoint presentation can therefore be quite challenging. Designing a PowerPoint presentation is comparable to designing a website. Only with a website, the site visitor is ultimately at the wheel. With a presentation it is the presenter who wants to make something clear to the audience.
Impactful PowerPoint presentations call for a unique combination of graphic skills, programme expertise and insight into the goal and context of the presentation.
