“Can you create a presentation with AI?” “Do you work with AI?” “There are AI tools for that too, aren't there?”
Every day clients ask us whether and how we work with artificial intelligence. The answer? AI offers opportunities, but also limitations. To this day we have not yet found an AI tool that can create a perfect presentation entirely independently – one with a strong story and a professional design. Or an AI tool that solves the frustrations of making a presentation. But that does not mean AI cannot play a role during the process.
Creating an impactful presentation begins with writing out a strong story. And that is where AI can inspire you. With a specific question you get a complete text, a start or 10 fresh ideas. Or did you get stuck while writing? AI helps you to prevent and overcome writer's block.
If you ask AI to build a complete presentation, then you get a linear framework without surprising angles. Thinking out-of-the-box is not easy, not even for AI. For a subject like “ancient Egypt” or “how chocolate is made” this is fine. For schools or teachers it is even ideal. But a business-focused presentation that really makes an impression? A specific sales presentation? There AI still falls short.
When we test AI in the field of presentation design, we already see nice designs. But actually AI makes the same mistakes as people: too much text, several messages on one slide and not enough slide variation. Moreover, AI reaches as far as basic visual elements, such as house-style colours and fonts. But a brand identity goes so much further than that. Aspects over which you have hardly any/no control with AI.
What AI produces depends on the prompt you enter. A good prompt delivers a better result. It takes knowledge and time to master that. In a white paper about professional applications of ChatGPT I read that ‘insufficient knowledge of prompt techniques' is one of the biggest reasons why the application of ChatGPT is underestimated. And that also holds true for all the AI initiatives currently being started up around creating presentations. It stands or falls with a good prompt. And if the result is not good, then the same frustration rears its head as when making a PowerPoint presentation.
Yes, if it is a linear and simple story and subject or if you are looking for a source of inspiration. And no, if you want a concrete or a specific presentation for your company that makes an impact. A presentation that has to align seamlessly with your brand and has to convince people. Then Smartpresentations is still the best address. 😊
Of course we keep a close eye on this progress. We respond to new possibilities and techniques in the field of presentation and graphic design. That is why we will soon be coming out with a specific offering around creating presentations and other designs in Canva.
AI is evolving so incredibly fast. What is not possible today may well be possible tomorrow. And with that, this text may already be out of date tomorrow. Which AI tools do you use today for your presentations?
