Can you use the same PowerPoint presentation for both an online and a physical presentation?

Watch the video about this blog post.

We all know from our own experience that following an online presentation has a totally different impact than a presentation in physical presence. We are more easily distracted by what is going on around us or by notifications on other screens. The attention span of your audience or conversation partner is therefore much smaller than in a physical meeting.

Online meetings are also much more exhausting than physical meetings. Because of the constant focus on the screen, the processing of what we see and hear is more taxing than in a physical space where we do not constantly have to focus on one point.

A presentation for an online presentation therefore requires a different approach.

Variation and interaction

  • Quick alternation of your slides is very important. Show one message per slide, which allows you to quickly show another slide on the screen.
  • Alternate with what your audience primarily sees on their screen. Regularly stop sharing your screen and show yourself as the speaker primarily on the screen, to then show the presentation again. This requires some experience with the tools you use, but it does create more dynamism.
  • You can also alternate between who is speaking. Regularly ask a question so that your conversation partner gets to speak. Of course, at that moment you also stop sharing your PowerPoint.

Specific

  • Be as specific as possible in your introduction. Keep the general introduction as short as possible and dive as quickly as possible into the specific wish or interest of your conversation partner.
  • Think carefully beforehand about what the content of the online conversation will be. Determining the content is very important and must be well considered.

Visually attractive

  • Pay extra attention too to what you show. The human brain is triggered above all by what it sees. In presentation terms this means above all less text and more images. This makes your presentation more engaging and it will stick for longer.

Conclusion: adapt the content of your presentation and your PowerPoint to the type of introduction. During an online presentation you have to present briefly and dynamically. Your PowerPoint must support you in this. So it makes sense to provide a separate version of your company or sales presentation for online meetings. An example of this is building up the PowerPoint interactively.
