Placing text on an image visibly and meaningfully is something to pause over when you are creating a presentation. After all, you want the text to come across as legible and clear. On top of that, the combination of text and image must support or even reinforce the message. There are various ways to place text on an image. Crucial, of course, is that your text remains legible and does not disappear entirely into your image. White text on a white part of the photo will have that consequence. So the image choice itself is also very important. So keep the following things in mind when you create your next presentation:
Using a bar behind the text can create a very modern effect on the slide. By placing a simple “bar”, your text gets just that little bit more flair and will therefore stand out more. Especially with quotes and pieces of text that need to be highlighted, this comes into its own very well.
It goes without saying, of course, that your text must remain legible at all times. So choose a somewhat darker photo to let your white text stand out nicely. Do you still want to use that light preferred photo? Then try to darken the part where you want to place the text in Photoshop (but make sure it does not stand out too much). A final solution is to place a coloured or plain filter over your photo to create some contrast.
By making use of a few small extras, your slide can be further embellished. A hatched little block, extra lines or an extra-large quotation mark are just a few examples of this.
BEWARE: In many cases the power of an image is sufficient and you do not need to add any extra elements; you obviously have to sense this a little yourself.
Personal preference Often, however, the choice of one of the above elements is a matter of personal preference. Tastes differ, so everyone will have a different opinion about what exactly they find attractive. In that case, try above all to look at what best fits the look & feel of the presentation.
