New Year's speech: essential tips for a powerful address

The end-of-year period is just around the corner, and that means receptions, speeches and the chance to bring a strong message. A good New Year's speech or presentation goes beyond a simple toast. It is the moment to look back, look ahead and motivate your team for the year to come. With these practical tips you turn your speech or presentation into a moment to remember.

Preparation

A successful New Year's speech begins with good preparation. Consider the following points:

  • Know your audience. Tailor your story to the people listening to you. What do you want to give them?
  • Choose the right setting. Check the room, the stage, lighting, sound and the type of microphone. Practise a little in the place where you are going to speak so you feel comfortable.
  • Use your PowerPoint. A visual presentation can be handy when you are discussing figures, results or goals. Deliberately choose slides that reinforce your message.
  • Write your speech in good time. You do not come up with a strong message five minutes before the moment. Take the time to work out your content properly.
  • Give attention to your message. A good New Year's speech or presentation may last 15 to 20 minutes. Long enough to captivate, short enough not to bore. Pay attention to the content and to how you deliver it.

Content

The content of your New Year's speech ideally consists of three parts:

  • Start strong. Just as with a presentation, you have to start strong. A quote, a bold statement or a rhetorical question.
  • Look back on the past year. Discuss the past year's objectives and whether they were achieved. Figures say more than words.
  • Look ahead to the new year. Share the plans and objectives for the coming year. Which moments will be important?
  • Inspire with a strong closing. Close with a powerful wish, a quotation or words of wisdom. You want to inspire here. In addition, you might surprise the audience, such as with an end-of-year gift, to make the moment unforgettable.

Practical tips

  • Speak calmly. Are you nervous? Slow your speaking pace slightly to convey your words better.
  • Be yourself. Authenticity makes your message more powerful. Smile, breathe calmly and make contact with your audience.
  • Wait with the alcohol. Champagne belongs at a reception, but save it for after your speech.
  • Use PowerPoint wisely. If you use visuals, make sure they support the heart of your story and do not distract.
